Champagne Roland Boulard et Filles Cuvée Roland Boulard
Champagne Roland Boulard, a family estate located north of Reims in Cormicy, has been producing outstanding Champagne since the 1970s. Founded by Roland Boulard, the estate has always had a strong female presence, and it is now proudly led by the youngest of his three daughters, Nathalie, alongside her husband, Benoit. Their own three daughters are already showing great passion for the family business, with Laurine having already started working at the estate after university.
A legacy of passion and the "Roses" of the estate
The Boulard family’s deep connection to their land and heritage is symbolised by the "Les Roses" in their communication. These three roses represent Nathalie and Benoit's daughters—Laurine, Julie, and Ludivine—the next generation of the family. Their estate emblem, the Griffon, symbolises the family’s protective spirit, while the roses signify the future of the estate, grounded in tradition but looking forward with vibrancy and passion.
Sustainability and respect for the environment are at the heart of the Boulard family’s winemaking philosophy. Certified with High Environmental Value level 3 (HVE-3) and adhering to the “Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne” charter, their vineyards span 10 hectares, including their historic plots in Cormicy, Hermonville, and Neuville-aux-Larris. More recently, they have expanded into the prestigious Mailly-Champagne Grand Cru, adding even greater depth and distinction to their cuvées.
Historically, small growers like Roland Boulard often sold some of their production "sur lattes" (on the lees, prior to disgorging) to the big Champagne houses. In 2010, the law changed on how Champagne could be traded within the region, and producers like Roland faced the decision of whether to focus entirely on producing quality wines under their own brand or join cooperatives. Roland Boulard chose to invest heavily in both the vineyards and the cellar, prioritising quality over volume. This decision paid off, and their recent acquisition of Grand Cru sites further confirms their upward trajectory. Their wines are now gaining well-deserved recognition, making them a producer to watch.
The Cuvée Roland Boulard: A tribute to the founder
This Blanc de Noirs, named in honour of the estate’s founder, is crafted from 60% Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne and 40% Pinot Noir from the Massif de Saint-Thierry—the only two red grape varieties permitted in the Champagne AOP. Although these grapes have dark skins, their clear juice is gently pressed and vinified without skin contact. The result is a Champagne that combines the subtle structure of red grapes with the elegance and freshness of a white wine.
The cuvée is made from the best first press juices, 60% wine from the 2020 vintage and 40% reserve wines, resulting in a layered and complex profile. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and aged on its lees for 20 months during secondary fermentation, it possesses remarkable depth and finesse. With a dosage of 7.8g/l, this Brut Champagne is perfectly balanced—offering richness, freshness, and a luxurious mouthfeel.
Tasting notes: Vibrant and sophisticated
Appearance
A radiant golden hue with a fine, continuous stream of bubbles, reflecting its extended ageing on lees and meticulous winemaking.
Nose
A powerful yet elegant bouquet, with layered aromas of citrus zest, ripe orchard fruits such as pear, and stone fruits like Mirabelle plum. Subtle hints of toasted brioche, almond, and delicate white flowers add complexity, reflecting the extended lees ageing and quality of the reserve wines in the blend.
Palate
The initial taste is bold and lively, offering flavours of crisp white fruits—pear and apple—enhanced by a creamy texture from its time on lees. This is followed by deeper, richer notes of apricot and grapefruit, with a gentle touch of spice and minerality. The long, balanced finish features refined acidity that leaves a refreshing citrus lift, complemented by a delicate hint of toasted hazelnut.
Food pairings: Refined versatility
Cuvée Roland Boulard is a Champagne that elevates any occasion, from celebratory moments to gourmet dining:
-
Oysters & shellfish: Its crisp citrus notes enhance the delicate brininess of oysters and shellfish.
-
Fish and chips: Yes, it does!
-
Creamy poultry dishes: The Champagne’s lively acidity cuts through rich, creamy sauces, creating a balanced and delightful pairing.
-
Soft cheeses & charcuterie: A delightful match for creamy Brie or rich charcuterie boards.
-
As an apéritif: Perfect for toasting at the start of an elegant gathering or pairing with light hors d'oeuvres like smoked salmon or canapés.
A Champagne discovered by coincidence: Hiding in plain sight
Our relationship with Champagne Rolland Boulard came about thanks to a fortunate coincidence. Laurine Boulard joined us at Sommelier's Choice for her university placement, where she learnt a lot about the wine trade and our business. As her time with us came to an end, we organised a farewell barbecue and invited some of our wine trade friends. Laurine’s father, Benoit, sent a few bottles of their Champagnes to share at the event. It was clear from the first glass that these were no ordinary wines—they were hidden gems. At that time, they weren’t exporting to any country, never mind the UK—they were only selling directly to a handful of smart restaurants and at the cellar door. Laurine let the wines do all the talking—and the rest, as they say, is history.
Laurine Boulard: Rising talent in Champagne
Laurine’s dedication to learning about the business of wine and her family’s potential in the world of wine was evident during her placement with us, and she has continued to impress after rejoining the family business. In 2023, Laurine won the public vote at the “Jeunes Talents du Champagne” competition for this very cuvée, a remarkable achievement for a small family-run producer still building its reputation. With her parents Nathalie and Benoit still leading the estate, Laurine’s involvement ensures an exciting future for the Boulard family’s wines.
Conclusion: A Champagne of tradition and innovation
Cuvée Roland Boulard is more than just a tribute to the estate’s founder—it embodies the Boulard family’s dedication to excellence. Their commitment to quality, respect for the land, and willingness to innovate is evident in every taste of this outstanding Champagne. Remember where you discovered it first!
