Vineyards and winemaking
Domaine de Grange Neuve lies at Pomport in the Monbazillac appellation, where autumn mists encourage noble rot and concentrate the grapes while preserving valuable acidity. The 2022 is a blend of 80% Sémillon, 10% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Muscadelle, harvested by hand in successive passes so that only suitably ripened berries are selected.
After fermentation, 75% of the wine is matured in stainless steel and up to 25% in French oak for six months, principally in second- and third-use 300-litre barrels. This measured use of wood supports texture without obscuring the vivid botrytis fruit.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Luminous golden yellow, with a bright sheen and generous viscosity.
Nose
Fresh orange marmalade, ripe apricot and dried mango are layered with acacia honey, nectarine and a light floral note.
Palate
Sweet and rounded, with flavours of apricot, candied citrus and honey balanced by a firm line of acidity. A twist of bitter orange lends definition to the clean, persistent finish and prevents the wine from feeling heavy.
Food pairing
The 50cl format is ideal for a smaller table. Pair with duck-liver parfait and toasted brioche, Stilton with walnuts, apricot and almond tart, or a classic tarte Tatin. It can also be served well chilled as an aperitif.
Background story
Domaine de Grange Neuve has roots extending to 1898 and is associated with the Pichon and Castaing families. Its vineyards occupy the rolling countryside around Pomport, close to Bergerac, where Sémillon and its traditional partners are especially well suited to the production of naturally sweet wine.
The estate holds France's Haute Valeur Environnementale Level 3 certification and has invested in measures including biological water treatment and solar energy. This 2022 captures Monbazillac's generous side while retaining the freshness that makes the appellation so versatile at the table.
