Vineyards
The Champans Premier Cru vineyard is one of the most esteemed sites in Volnay, situated mid-slope on well-drained, limestone-rich soils. The vineyard benefits from a south-eastern exposure, capturing optimal sunlight to enhance ripening while preserving the finesse and elegance characteristic of Volnay. The vines, averaging 50 years in age, are cultivated biodynamically to ensure healthy vines and an authentic expression of terroir.
Winemaking
The 2015 vintage, celebrated for its warm and consistent growing season, produced fruit of exceptional concentration and balance. Grapes were hand-harvested and carefully sorted before undergoing fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, striking a balance between subtle oak influence and the preservation of fruit purity.
Appearance
Deep ruby with garnet reflections, hinting at its youthfulness and potential for further ageing.
Nose
Elegant and complex, the nose reveals aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and violets, interwoven with subtle notes of earth, graphite, and sweet baking spices.
Palate
Medium-bodied with a silky texture and finely structured tannins. Flavours of red berries and plum are complemented by savoury undertones of forest floor and a hint of clove. The wine’s vibrant acidity provides freshness and balance, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish that showcases the finesse of Volnay.
Food pairing
Pairs beautifully with roasted duck, coq au vin, or wild mushroom dishes such as risotto or puff pastry tarts. It also complements semi-hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda.
