Vineyards

The vineyards for Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2002 are located in Central Otago, a region celebrated for its exceptional Pinot Noir. Planted on schist and gravel soils, the vines benefit from a cool climate with warm days and cool nights, allowing for slow, even ripening. These conditions result in grapes with concentrated flavours, balanced acidity, and a distinctive mineral character.

Winemaking

The 2002 vintage was an outstanding year, combining the best elements of the 2000 and 2001 vintages. A lacklustre summer created ideal growing conditions for the vines, leading to an early harvest with low to moderate yields and small berry size. The gravity flow winery allowed for gentle destemming directly into open-top fermenters, avoiding pumping to preserve the fruit's integrity. Fermentation was traditional, with a moderately long maceration on skins to extract colour and tannins. The wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels from renowned Burgundian coopers, adding depth and complexity.

Appearance

Medium ruby with garnet hues, reflecting its maturity and ageing potential.

Nose

The nose reveals an alluring bouquet of violets, black cherry, and exotic spices, complemented by subtle earthy undertones and hints of cedar.

Palate

On the palate, this Pinot Noir offers deep and concentrated ripe fruit flavours of cherry and plum, interwoven with delicate spice and a touch of minerality. The chewy yet silky tannins are well-balanced by fresh acidity, leading to a long, elegant finish. This vintage showcases both richness and finesse, with excellent cellaring potential.

Food pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck, herb-crusted lamb, or venison stew. It also complements earthy dishes like wild mushroom risotto or hard cheeses, making it an ideal choice for refined cuisine.
