Vineyards
The Beaune Les Bressandes vineyard is a prestigious Premier Cru site in the Côte de Beaune, known for its excellent exposure and limestone-rich soils, which are perfect for Pinot Noir. Jean-Claude Rateau, a biodynamic pioneer in Burgundy since 1979, carefully cultivates old vines, many over 100 years of age, on this exceptional terroir. His fastidious biodynamic approach ensures the health and vitality of the vines, allowing them to thrive naturally and express the unique characteristics of their climat.
Winemaking
The 1998 vintage was crafted with minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit and terroir. After a gentle harvest, the grapes underwent maceration for 15–20 days, with pressing by hand or foot. The wine was then aged on fine lees for 11–20 months in 3 to 10-year-old 228-litre barrels, ensuring a delicate oak influence that complements the wine's natural elegance. A light filtration was conducted before bottling to maintain clarity without compromising texture.
Appearance
The wine displays a medium ruby colour with garnet hues, indicative of its age and graceful evolution.
Nose
The bouquet offers complex aromas of dried red berries, forest floor, and savoury herbs, complemented by notes of violets, underbrush, and a hint of earthy minerality.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied with a silky texture. Flavours of redcurrants, cherries, and dried cranberries are layered with subtle spice and savoury tones. Fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity provide structure, leading to a long, harmonious finish with lingering notes of truffle and autumn leaves.
Food pairing
This elegant Premier Cru pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes. It also complements soft cheeses like Brie or Époisses, enhancing the wine's earthy and savoury profile.
Background story
Jean-Claude Rateau is renowned as the first vigneron in Burgundy to adopt biodynamic principles, starting with just 1.5 hectares of family vines in 1979. Today, he farms about 20 parcels in and around Beaune, crafting wines that reflect the unique character of each terroir.
