Vineyards
The 2017 vintage reflects the limestone and clay soils of Montagne-Saint-Émilion, which provide excellent drainage and impart a refined structure to the wine. The vines, averaging 35 years, are cultivated sustainably to ensure consistent quality and biodiversity.
Winemaking
The 2017 vintage was shaped by cooler temperatures and occasional rainfall, producing fresh and vibrant fruit. Hand-harvested grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new.
Appearance
Bright ruby red with garnet highlights.
Nose
The nose is fresh and inviting, with aromas of redcurrants, violets, and raspberries, layered with subtle hints of cedar and baking spices.
Palate
Medium-bodied and elegant, the palate reveals flavours of red berries, cranberries, and a touch of minerality. Fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity provide balance, leading to a clean, lingering finish.
Food pairing
Ideal with roasted pork, grilled lamb, or mushroom risotto. Its freshness also complements charcuterie and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert.
Background story
Vieux Château Saint André, owned by the Berrouet family, reflects a legacy of winemaking excellence. Jean-Claude Berrouet, the celebrated former winemaker of Château Pétrus, managed the estate until 2002, when his son, Jean-François Berrouet, took over. Together, they produce wines that reflect their terroir with elegance and restraint. As Jane Anson notes in Inside Bordeaux, the estate delivers wines of "unfussy brilliance," showcasing Montagne-Saint-Émilion's potential for exceptional quality at accessible prices.
