Vineyards
The vineyards for Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas "Renaissance" 2016 are located on the steep, terraced slopes of the Cornas appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley. These granitic soils, combined with the warm Mediterranean climate moderated by the Mistral winds, provide ideal conditions for cultivating Syrah. The "Renaissance" cuvée is made from a blend of fruit from younger vines on Reynard and Patou, as well as older parcels on Sabarotte, showcasing the appellation’s diverse terroirs.
Winemaking
This cuvée is crafted from 100% Syrah using traditional methods. Grapes were hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and fermented in open-top wooden vats to preserve the purity of fruit and expression of terroir. The wine underwent extended ageing for 22 months in large, old oak foudres, allowing for tannin integration and the development of a nuanced, elegant profile.
Appearance
Deep ruby with garnet reflections, highlighting its youthful vibrancy and ageing potential.
Nose
Aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and black cherries are layered with savoury notes of black olive, smoked meat, and dried herbs. Subtle hints of pepper and a touch of violets add depth and complexity.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied yet approachable, with flavours of dark berries, liquorice, and earthy undertones. The finely-grained tannins are beautifully integrated, supported by fresh acidity that lends balance and energy. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with lingering notes of spice and graphite.
Food pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb, grilled venison, or beef stew. It also complements dishes with earthy flavours, such as wild mushroom risotto, and hard cheeses.
