“Ferro” is widely regarded as one of the best single-varietal Petit Verdots in the world
Vineyards
The Petit Verdot grapes for Ferro are cultivated in Collazzi's estate vineyards near Florence. The vines, averaging 25 years in age, are planted in clay and limestone soils rich in minerals, situated at an altitude of approximately 150 metres with a south-southwest exposure. This positioning, within a natural amphitheatre, provides a warmer and drier microclimate compared to surrounding areas, allowing for prolonged and complete grape maturation.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested manually and transported quickly to the cellar, ensuring optimal freshness due to the vineyard's proximity to the winemaking facility. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, followed by malolactic fermentation in 225-litre oak barrels. The wine is then aged for 24 months in French oak, imparting depth, complexity, and refinement to the final product.
Appearance
Deep garnet with hints of ruby, reflecting both its maturity and concentration.
Nose
Evolved and complex, offering notes of dried blackberries, plum, and balsamic undertones, interwoven with hints of dark chocolate, tobacco, and a touch of spice.
Palate
Full-bodied and structured, showcasing rich layers of black fruit, liquorice, and earth, balanced by refined tannins. The acidity has softened slightly, providing elegance and harmony, while the oak aging imparts subtle spice and depth. The finish is long and lingering, with savoury mineral notes and a touch of cocoa.
Food pairing
The mature structure and complexity of this wine make it an excellent pairing for dry-aged steak, slow-cooked lamb, or rich stews. It also complements aged cheeses and truffle-based dishes, enhancing its depth and tannic profile.
Background story
Collazzi, located just a few kilometres from Florence, is a magnificent estate owned by the Marchi family since 1933. This 400-hectare property, originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560, features over 25 hectares of vineyards and 140 hectares of olive trees. Collazzi is not only known for its historical significance but also for its modern winemaking excellence.
The estate’s vineyards have undergone significant restructuring since the mid-1990s by the latest generation of the family, Marchese Lamberto de' Frescobaldi, along with oenologist Alberto Torelli.
The sandy, clayey, limestone-rich soils of Collazzi, along with its abundant rocky content, are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, as well as the traditional Sangiovese. This varietal approach, in harmony with the temperate microclimate of the area and the precise grape selection, alongside extensive use of oak barrels for both fermentation and ageing, results in elegant, fruit-driven, and structured wines.
Collazzi continues to produce wines that are not only of exceptional quality but also reflect the rich history and dedication of the Marchi family. Their commitment to sustainable practices and innovation ensures that Collazzi remains a leader in the region.
