Vineyards
The organic vineyards of Quinta da Boa Esperança are located north of Lisbon, at a higher altitude near the historic fishing town of Ericeira, which is also known as a world-class surfing destination. This geographical location benefits the vineyards with both maritime and altitude influences, contributing to the freshness and balance of the wines produced there.
Winemaking
Composed of Touriga Nacional and Syrah, harvested 100% manually into 15 kg cases. The grapes undergo total destemming, followed by a pre-fermentation maceration at 8°C for 48 hours to maximise aroma and colour extraction. Fermentation is conducted at a controlled temperature of 24°C to retain the vibrant characteristics of the grapes. A small proportion of the blend is aged in second-use French oak barrels, adding subtle structure and harmony to the wine, with further bottle aging enhancing its integration.
Appearance
The wine reveals an intense garnet colour, indicative of its depth and concentration.
Nose
The nose opens with fragrant floral notes, characteristic of Touriga Nacional, such as violets, alongside ripe dark berries and subtle hints of black pepper and spice from the Syrah. Light undertones of oak bring hints of vanilla and a touch of toast.
Palate
On the palate, the Handcrafted Blend 2015 offers a full-bodied and balanced experience. The dark fruit flavours, such as blackberries and plums, blend seamlessly with notes of spice and a touch of dark chocolate. The gentle oak influence adds layers of complexity, while the tannins are refined and well-integrated, leading to a long, harmonious finish that showcases both power and elegance.
Food pairing
Msde in collaboration with the sommelier and chef team of a group of fine dining restaurants specialising in steak, this wine pairs naturally with a variety of cuts. It also complements grilled meats, lamb dishes, and mature cheeses, making it a versatile choice for hearty meals.
Background story
After acquiring an ancestral family vineyard that had existed for hundreds of years, Quinta da Boa Esperança was established by Artur Gama and his wife Eva in 2014. Their 11 hectares of organic vineyards lie in the heart of Zibreira, within the renowned Lisbon Wine Region. Benefiting from proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Montejunto Ridge, the vineyards enjoy high elevation, ample sun exposure, and maritime influences, cultivating exceptional grapes of both local and international varietals, including Fernão Pires, Arinto, Sauvignon Blanc, Alvarinho, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, and Alicante Bouschet.
Dedicated to sustainability, the Gama family adheres to organic principles, extending their eco-friendly practices to growing their own vegetables, fruit, and herbs, and breeding chickens in their kitchen garden. This holistic approach ensures a harmonious coexistence with nature, reflected in their meticulous vineyard care, minimal intervention, and manual harvesting, resulting in wines that truly express the essence of their land.
