Vineyards and winemaking
Alión is made entirely from Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, selected from vineyards across Ribera del Duero. The region's high plateau, contrasting day and night temperatures and varied gravel, sand and clay-limestone soils help the grapes achieve depth while retaining the freshness needed for long ageing.
The 2005 was vinified with a modern, precise approach and matured in new French oak, the hallmark of Alión's interpretation of Ribera del Duero. Extended bottle age has softened the wine's once-powerful structure and brought its fruit, oak and savoury elements together. Stand upright before opening and decant cautiously, tasting as you go.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep garnet with a mature brick-red rim and good concentration at the core.
Nose
Layered aromas of black cherry, dried plum and cassis are joined by cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa and a cool note of graphite.
Palate
Full-bodied yet composed, with dark fruit, liquorice and savoury spice framed by polished, resolved tannins. The 2005 vintage now shows attractive secondary notes of leather, espresso and dried herbs, while Ribera's natural freshness keeps the palate defined. The finish is long, warming and mineral-edged.
Food pairing
Serve with slow-roast shoulder of lamb, beef short rib with a red-wine jus, venison loin with celeriac, or mature Manchego. The wine's age and complexity favour simply seasoned dishes over sweet or heavily spiced sauces.
Background story
Alión was established by the Álvarez family in 1986 as a distinct member of the Vega Sicilia family of estates. Its purpose was to give Tinto Fino a contemporary expression: recognisably Ribera del Duero, but shaped by meticulous selection and the disciplined use of French oak.
Unlike Vega Sicilia's longer, more traditional maturation, Alión was conceived with an independent identity built around purity, structure and accessibility. The 2005 is now a mature fine-and-rare bottle; condition and development will vary, so it is best enjoyed with the attention appropriate to an older wine.
