Vineyards and winemaking
Savigny-lès-Beaune sits in a side valley immediately north of Beaune, its varied limestone and clay soils producing Pinot Noir noted for fragrance, freshness and graceful structure. Le Village is made from 100% Pinot Noir and reflects the appellation's more restrained, finely drawn character.
The 2015 was matured for 16 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, allowing the fruit and tannins to settle while adding gentle spice and breadth. With a decade of bottle age, it is now in a mature phase; stand the bottle upright before opening and pour carefully if natural sediment is present.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Translucent garnet with tawny highlights developing at the edge.
Nose
Elegant aromas of dried raspberry, redcurrant and sour cherry unfold into rose petal, forest floor, cedar and a light savoury spice.
Palate
Dry and medium-bodied, with a fine line of acidity carrying delicate red fruit, tea leaf and earthy complexity. The tannins have softened into a silky frame, while measured oak contributes a hint of clove and toast. The finish is composed and gently savoury, with lingering cherry and woodland notes.
Food pairing
A thoughtful match for roast chicken with tarragon, venison sausages with puy lentils, mushroom and Gruyère tart, or grilled lamb cutlets with herbs. Serve lightly cool, at around 16°C, and allow the wine to open gradually in the glass.
Background story
Founded in Beaune in 1830, Arthur Barolet et Fils developed as a family-run Burgundy négociant-éleveur. The house assembled wines from many of the region's recognised villages, maturing and bottling them with an emphasis on traditional Burgundian character.
Savigny-lès-Beaune is sometimes quieter in reputation than its neighbouring Côte de Beaune villages, yet its best red wines offer precisely the perfume and understated detail that make mature Pinot Noir so compelling. This 2015 Le Village places that elegance ahead of weight, with bottle age bringing savoury depth to the vintage's ripe fruit.
