Origin and production

This single-vintage Armagnac comes from the 1963 harvest in Gascony. Baron de Lustrac works as a specialist négociant-éleveur, selecting eaux-de-vie from small partner estates in Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze, where sandy and clay-limestone soils can yield spirits of markedly different personality.

The base wine was traditionally distilled and the eau-de-vie matured slowly in oak at its estate of origin before selection and bottling by Baron de Lustrac. Long ageing has concentrated the spirit and developed rancio—the complex nutty, savoury character prized in old Armagnac.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep amber with old-gold highlights and a clear, polished brilliance.

Nose

Quince, baked pear and dried white flowers give way to caramel, cigar leaf and freshly ground coffee.

Palate

Silky and contemplative, with honeyed walnut, preserved orchard fruit and gentle peppery warmth. Notes of polished wood and mocha sit within the fruit rather than above it, and the finish is long, nutty and quietly savoury.

Serving suggestions

Pour neat into a tulip-shaped glass and leave it for several minutes before tasting. Excellent on its own after dinner, or with walnut cake, crystallised ginger, or a small piece of very dark chocolate; room temperature is sufficient without warming the glass by force.

Background story

Baron de Lustrac is known above all for its library of vintage Armagnacs. Rather than relying on one estate, the house maintains relationships with selected growers, seeking individual casks that preserve the identity of both their year and their place.

Final selection and bottling take place in the house's cellars at Nogaro. A spirit from 1963 offers a direct connection to a single harvest more than six decades ago, making it as appropriate for a significant anniversary as for slow, attentive drinking.
