Origin and production
This 1974 vintage was selected by Baron de Lustrac from its network of Armagnac growers in south-west France. The house works across Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze, seeking mature eaux-de-vie whose vineyard origin and cellar history remain clearly expressed.
The spirit was distilled from the year's base wine and matured over decades in oak before selection and bottling. Slow oxidation and contact with the wood have developed concentration, softness and the layered fruit, spice and nut character associated with old Armagnac.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Burnished amber with golden-mahogany depth and excellent clarity.
Nose
Dried apricot, date and prune open into orange oil, vanilla, violet and gently toasted wood.
Palate
Luxurious but controlled, with apricot preserve and caramelised almond supported by cinnamon and clove. A pleasing dry edge prevents the texture becoming heavy, and the finish carries honey, oak spice and dried citrus for several moments.
Serving suggestions
Enjoy neat at room temperature in a tulip glass. Its apricot and spice character works especially well with a bitter chocolate torte, almond tart, or blue cheese; pour modestly and allow time between sips.
Background story
Baron de Lustrac has built its reputation on vintage-dated Armagnac selected from small, traditional producers. Casks are allowed to mature at their home estates before the house makes its choice and completes the bottling process in Nogaro.
This 1974 is not simply an old blend carrying an age statement: it belongs to one declared harvest. That specificity makes each bottle a distinctive snapshot of Gascony and an evocative choice for commemorating the year.
