Origin and production
The 1978 is part of Baron de Lustrac's extensive collection of vintage Armagnacs sourced from independent estates in Gascony. Working in both Bas-Armagnac and Ténarèze gives the house access to eaux-de-vie shaped by different soils, grapes and individual traditions of distillation.
After being distilled from the 1978 wine, the spirit spent long years maturing in oak at its estate of origin. Selection and bottling through Nogaro preserve its vintage identity, with maturation adding the nutty, oxidative and spice-led complexity expected at this age.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep amber-bronze with flashes of copper and a bright, clear rim.
Nose
Dried apricot, orange peel and fig mingle with violet, vanilla, toasted walnut and a subtle note of sandalwood.
Palate
Rich and velvety, with honey, pecan and candied citrus unfolding into nutmeg and fine oak spice. The fruit remains articulate beneath the mature wood notes, and the finish is elegant, dry and quietly persistent.
Serving suggestions
Pour neat into a tulip glass and give the aromas time to gather. Consider it with bread-and-butter pudding, orange dark chocolate, or a sliver of mature Gouda; avoid ice, which would mute the oldest and most delicate notes.
Background story
Baron de Lustrac's role is that of a specialist selector and élevage house. Long relationships with growers allow it to identify casks whose personality merits individual vintage release rather than absorption into a broader blend.
The 1978 presents Armagnac as both drink and historical object: a single harvest transformed by distillation, wood and time. Its appeal lies in the meeting of that precise date with the singular evolution of the chosen eau-de-vie.
