Vineyards and winemaking

Il Bacialé is a Monferrato blend led by Barbera and supported by Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Fruit from the family's vineyards in Castelnuovo Calcea, San Marzano Oliveto and Rocchetta Tanaro combines Barbera's freshness with the structure and darker flavour of the French varieties.

Each component is vinified separately so that its character can be retained. Barbera develops in large Slavonian oak, while the French grapes mature in smaller French barriques; after blending, the wine rests again in large casks, giving the 2017 a rounded, integrated profile.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep ruby-garnet with a clear, gently evolved edge.

Nose

Black cherry, cassis and ripe plum are joined by violet, cracked pepper, cedar and a light note of roasted walnut.

Palate

Generous and supple, with juicy dark fruit, ripe tannins and a bright line of Barbera acidity. Cabernet brings savoury firmness, Merlot softens the centre, and integrated oak adds cocoa and sweet spice before a smooth, persistent finish.

Food pairing

Try with pappardelle and duck ragù, rosemary-roasted lamb, steak with peppercorn sauce, or baked aubergines with lentils and Parmesan. A short decant and a serving temperature of 16–17°C will show the blend at its most expressive.

Background story

Il Bacialé takes its name from the traditional Piedmontese matchmaker, an apt image for a wine built on bringing different grapes together. Rather than disguising their contrasts, Braida uses Barbera's natural vitality to connect the richer, more structured varieties into a coherent whole.

The wine also reflects Giacomo Bologna's curiosity and willingness to look beyond established local practice. Sommelier's Choice has worked with the Bologna family for over two decades, a collaboration sustained by that combination of Piedmontese identity, thoughtful innovation and warm hospitality.
