Vineyards and winemaking

This 100% Chenin Blanc comes from unirrigated Western Cape vines grown on sandy loam over granite bedrock. Dry farming and naturally restricted yields encourage concentration, while Chenin's inherent acidity helps the grapes retain energy in the Cape sunshine.

Part of the blend is fermented with wild yeasts and a very small proportion in older barrels, with extended contact on fine lees adding weight and texture. The restrained use of seasoned oak broadens the palate without giving an overtly woody flavour.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Clear pale gold with bright lemon reflections.

Nose

White peach, baked apple and lemon zest are joined by a touch of honeysuckle and warm straw.

Palate

Ripe and honeyed at first, then tightened by crisp citrus acidity. Apple and stone fruit fill the centre, while fine-lees contact adds a gentle creaminess and the small barrel component contributes texture rather than oak flavour. The finish is clean and quietly mineral.

Food pairing

Pair with roast chicken and lemon, grilled mackerel, Cape Malay vegetable curry, or a goats' cheese and beetroot salad. Serve at around 9°C and allow it to warm slightly in the glass to show its fuller texture.

Background story

Cape Heights is made to give a clear, good-value expression of South Africa's Western Cape. Chenin Blanc has a particularly deep history in the country's vineyards and remains one of its most versatile grapes, capable of combining ripeness with decisive acidity.

The 2024 favours careful texture over overt winemaking flavour. Dry-farmed fruit, lees ageing and a discreet older-barrel component give it more substance than a purely tank-made white while preserving the freshness expected of an everyday Chenin.
