Vineyards and winemaking
This Mâcon-Villages is drawn from Chardonnay vineyards across the rolling Mâconnais, where clay-limestone soils and a comparatively warm Burgundian climate encourage ripe yellow fruit while retaining a fresh mineral line.
Fermentation in stainless steel protects the purity and immediacy of the fruit. A period on the lees brings a little extra weight and softness, keeping the style generous and rounded without relying on overt oak.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright straw gold, clear and youthful.
Nose
Ripe apple, yellow plum and lemon curd are joined by a light buttered note and a hint of spring flowers.
Palate
Smooth and easy-flowing, with orchard fruit at the centre and enough acidity to maintain lift. Subtle cream and mineral notes add interest, leading to a clean finish of apple and citrus peel.
Food pairing
A versatile match for smoked-haddock fishcakes, roast chicken sandwiches with watercress, leek and Cheddar tart, or steamed mussels with cream and herbs. It is equally comfortable as a well-chilled aperitif.
Background story
Domaine de Pouilly is based in Solutré-Pouilly at the heart of the Mâconnais. Brothers Vincent and Pierre-Antoine Besson represent the family's fifth generation of winegrowers, following a line that began with their grandfather Pétrus in 1933.
The domaine covers approximately 20 hectares across numerous parcels in Pouilly-Fuissé and neighbouring appellations. Many vines are more than 50 years old, and the brothers combine sustainable cultivation with close personal oversight from vineyard to bottle. Their Mâcon-Villages is designed to show the open, welcoming side of Chardonnay from southern Burgundy, with immediate fruit and sufficient detail to remain interesting throughout a meal.
