Vineyards and winemaking
Gamay grows close to the Choblet family's Muscadet vineyards at Bouaye, where the Lac de Grand-Lieu, Loire and Atlantic soften temperature extremes. The estate's mixed mica-schist, granite, sand and sedimentary soils lend freshness to the grape's generous fruit.
A short maceration draws colour and flavour without imposing heavy tannin. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel then preserves the youthful berry aromas and light, flowing structure that make the wine particularly versatile.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright purple-ruby with a clear, youthful rim.
Nose
Blackberry and blackcurrant are lifted by red cherry, violet and a twist of white pepper.
Palate
Light-bodied, juicy and smooth, with lively berry fruit and supple tannins. Fresh acidity keeps the palate energetic, while a peppery note adds definition to the clean finish.
Food pairing
Chill lightly and serve with sausage rolls and piccalilli, roast chicken thighs, grilled pork skewers, or a beetroot and black-bean burger. It is also an easy companion to a plate of British charcuterie.
Background story
Domaine du Haut Bourg is a four-generation family estate in Bouaye, south of Nantes, now run by brothers Hervé and Nicolas Choblet. The vineyards lie between the Lac de Grand-Lieu, the Loire and the Atlantic, a setting that moderates temperatures and supports fresh, evenly ripened fruit.
Gamay may be most closely associated with Beaujolais, but it has a long and convincing place in the Loire. The Choblets treat it simply, allowing the variety's exuberant fruit and their cool western setting to speak without unnecessary weight.
