Vineyards and winemaking

Libertà is produced from younger vineyards around the Collazzi estate at Impruneta. Rocky clay soils rich in limestone and fossils, a south-western exposure and a warm, dry local microclimate allow Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to ripen fully while retaining freshness.

The varieties are harvested by hand and vinified separately in temperature-controlled tanks. Maturation in wood, including 225-litre barrels, rounds the tannins and brings the components together without the prolonged élevage reserved for the flagship Collazzi.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep, vivid ruby red with a clear garnet rim.

Nose

Plum and black cherry are joined by cassis, violet, dried herbs and a discreet balsamic note.

Palate

Soft and rounded, with Merlot giving generous fruit, Cabernet Sauvignon adding structure and Cabernet Franc bringing aromatic lift. Smooth tannins and lively acidity lead to a balanced finish of spice and dark berries.

Food pairing

Try with pappardelle and beef ragù, pork chops with rosemary, a sausage and fennel traybake, or baked aubergine with tomato and Parmesan. Its supple structure also works with a board of cured meats.

Background story

Collazzi lies at Impruneta, a few kilometres south-west of Florence, on a historic estate owned by the Marchi family since 1933. The Renaissance villa is traditionally associated with designs by Michelangelo, while the modern vineyards were substantially restructured from the mid-1990s under Lamberto de' Frescobaldi and oenologist Alberto Torelli.

First made in 2008, Libertà is the estate's more immediate Bordeaux-variety blend. Its name means freedom and refers to a word added to an earlier owner's coat of arms in 1376 after fighting for Florence. The 2019 offers Collazzi's polished character in a softer, earlier-drinking form.
