Vineyards and winemaking
Mayne-Vieil’s 100% Merlot vines, averaging 35 to 40 years, grow on moderately steep clay-silt slopes in Fronsac. Close planting, permanent grass cover and green harvesting help control vigour and yields, concentrating the fruit while preserving the freshness that gives Right Bank Merlot its shape.
The wine was vinified in vat, with most of the 2019 retained in concrete to protect its direct black-fruit character and around 20% matured in oak for added breadth. This restrained use of barrel allows the clay-grown Merlot to remain generous, earthy and clearly defined.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Bright deep ruby with garnet reflections.
Nose
Blackberry, mulberry and black plum are joined by dark-roast coffee and dried herbs. A discreet note of cedar and toast sits beneath the fruit.
Palate
Dense and full-bodied, with ripe dark berries set against firm but smooth tannins. Juicy acidity gives the palate lift, leading to a persistent finish of plum, graphite and mocha.
Food pairing
Pair with roast lamb shoulder, beef and mushroom pie, Toulouse sausages with lentils, or an aubergine and puy-lentil bake. Mature Cheddar will meet its richness comfortably.
Background story
Château Mayne-Vieil occupies 32 hectares in Fronsac and focuses on Merlot from its clay-silt hillside. The estate’s sustainable approach and low-yielding vineyard work produce a generous, characterful alternative to neighbouring Saint-Émilion.
The 2019 vintage combines ample fruit with a solid tannic core and is now approachable with food. Decant for around an hour if opened now and serve at 16–18°C; it may also continue to develop in a cool cellar.
