Vineyards and winemaking
This 2018 Colheita Tinto is an almost equal blend of Castelão, Syrah and Aragonez, all grown at Quinta da Boa Esperança in Zibreira. The estate’s clay-limestone soils, sunny slopes and proximity to the Atlantic give the fruit both ripeness and a valuable thread of freshness.
The grapes were fully destemmed and cold-macerated at 8°C before controlled fermentation in conical vats. The wine was then rested in bottle for 12 months, allowing the varieties to knit together while keeping the emphasis on fruit rather than overt oak.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep garnet-red with a mature brick tint at the edge.
Nose
Black cherry, red plum and blackberry are joined by dried thyme, pepper and a gentle autumnal note.
Palate
Rounded and savoury, with mellow red and black fruit framed by smooth tannins and fresh acidity. Aragonez brings warmth, Castelão a lively red-fruit line and Syrah darker spice, leading to a balanced, softly evolved finish. Bottle variation is possible at this age; stand upright before opening.
Food pairing
Pair with pork and chorizo stew, roast lamb, beef meatballs in tomato sauce or grilled aubergines with lentils. A wedge of mature Red Leicester also suits its mellow fruit and spice.
Background story
Artur and Eva Gama revived Quinta da Boa Esperança at an ancestral property with a long history of wine production. Their vineyards in Zibreira lie in a valley of varied slopes and exposures, less than 20 kilometres from the Atlantic.
Colheita Tinto brings together a traditional Portuguese variety, Castelão, with Aragonez and the internationally established Syrah. The blend reflects the estate’s broader philosophy: local identity, measured cellar work and wines made to remain useful at the table.
