Vineyards and winemaking
This 2020 Pomares Tinto blends Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional from the schist slopes of the Douro. The three grapes bring complementary qualities: red-fruit breadth, floral depth and firm structure, moderated by the freshness of the estate’s varied elevations and exposures.
The hand-picked fruit fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel before 12 months in French oak. Barrel ageing adds sweet spice and toast to the wine’s generous fruit, while careful blending keeps the tannins rounded and the body fluid.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Deep ruby with a garnet edge.
Nose
Ripe raspberry, black cherry and plum are joined by violet, toasted spice and a trace of cocoa.
Palate
Succulent and smooth, with red and black fruit flowing across rounded tannins. Sweet oak spice is neatly integrated, while fresh acidity gives the palate lift and carries a long, gently mineral finish.
Food pairing
Pair with pork and chorizo casserole, lamb burgers, meatballs in tomato sauce or a smoky bean stew. It also works well with a generously filled steak and ale pie.
Background story
Pomares is Quinta Nova’s modern, approachable expression of the Douro. The range draws on the estate’s understanding of individual parcels but is composed for charm, balance and versatility rather than monumentality.
The estate extends along the right bank of the Douro in the Cima Corgo, with 41 vineyard plots and an average vine age of around 45 years. The Amorim family has guided Quinta Nova since 1999, combining its long history with precise contemporary winemaking.
