Vineyards and winemaking
This Rioja is drawn from Real Agrado's own vineyards in the warmer eastern reaches of the denomination. Garnacha and Tempranillo form the core of the blend, combining generous fruit with structure in a landscape of clay-limestone soils, abundant sunshine and cooling local winds.
The 2019 wine matured for 12 months, principally in American oak with a smaller proportion of French barrels. The élevage brings spice and polish while retaining the red and black fruit that defines the estate's classic range.
Tasting notes
Appearance
Clear ruby-red with purple-garnet reflections.
Nose
Blueberry, raspberry and blackberry meet aniseed, vanilla and a measured touch of toasted oak.
Palate
Welcoming and balanced, with ripe berry fruit, fresh acidity and gentle tannic grip. Garnacha gives roundness, Tempranillo lends shape, and integrated oak adds spice through a persistent, elegant finish. The wine is now developing mature nuances, so stand upright and open with care.
Food pairing
A versatile partner for roast pork belly, beef meatballs in tomato sauce, chicken with chorizo, or lentil shepherd's pie. It also sits comfortably beside a board of Serrano ham and semi-mature cheeses.
Background story
Real Agrado began with the planting of 100 hectares between Aldeanueva de Ebro and Alfaro in 1974. For three decades the fruit contributed to other respected wines before an estate winery was built in 2005 and the producer began bottling under its own name.
The classic Rioja range is intended to be fruit-led and balanced, with complexity increasing as the wines spend time in barrel. This 2019 bottling captures that house style in an approachable, traditionally matured red.
