Appearance
Rich amber with golden highlights and radiant clarity. The spirit forms slow, thick legs, indicative of its long aging and concentration.
Nose
A complex bouquet of stewed prunes, candied orange peel, and dried apricots is complemented by notes of toasted almonds, vanilla, and delicate spices. Hints of cedarwood, cocoa, and a touch of leather emerge with time in the glass, adding further depth.
Palate
The palate is smooth and luxurious, offering layers of caramelised fruit, honeyed figs, and roasted nuts, balanced by a refined oak influence. Subtle notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and dark chocolate add complexity. The texture is velvety, with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, leading to a long, warm finish marked by dried fruit and spice.
Key production details
This 1965 vintage was distilled in a traditional copper alembic still at Château de Bordeneuve, the family estate of Baron de Sigognac. The spirit was aged for over 50 years in hand-crafted French oak barrels stored in ancient, beaten-earth cellars, allowing it to develop its exceptional aromatic profile. The estate specialises exclusively in the production of Bas-Armagnac, using traditional methods passed down through generations, ensuring meticulous control at every stage from vineyard to bottle.
Serving suggestions
Best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped glass to fully appreciate its complex aromas. This rare vintage pairs wonderfully with fine cigars, dark chocolate desserts, or simply as a contemplative after-dinner drink.
Background story
Baron de Sigognac is a historic Armagnac house owned by the Guasch family, whose roots in Gascony date back to the 12th century. Situated on 42 hectares of prime Bas-Armagnac terroir near the Roman town of Eauze, the estate has been dedicated exclusively to Armagnac production since 1980. The vineyard cultivates traditional varieties, primarily Baco and Ugni Blanc, which thrive in the region’s tawny-sandy soils and microclimate.
The distillation process at Château de Bordeneuve is carried out using a rare in-house copper alembic still dating back to 1921. The estate’s cellars, some of which date to the Middle Ages, provide an ideal environment for long-term aging. Baron de Sigognac is renowned for its extensive collection of vintage Armagnacs, with bottlings dating back to 1830. Each vintage is aged separately and bottled only when it reaches peak maturity, ensuring an exceptional tasting experience with every release.
Baron de Sigognac Armagnacs are celebrated worldwide for their purity, elegance, and fruit-driven profiles, making them highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.
