Picollo Ernesto is a gem within Gavi, standing out amidst the mass-scale, commercial production that dominates the area. Nestled among the rolling hills encircling the town, this region enjoys a more Mediterranean climate than the north, benefiting from constant maritime breezes unique to southern Piedmont. The vineyards, located at 260 metres above sea level in Rovereto di Gavi, one of the appellation's most prestigious areas, span 16 hectares and are planted exclusively with Cortese.
This varietal thrives in challenging soil, dry climate, and full sun exposure, all of which Rovereto provides abundantly. The south-facing vineyards and clay-rich soils, which conserve water year-round even during summer, enhance vine health and grape quality. Founded by Lorenzo Picollo in 1945, the winery's management passed to his son Ernesto and now to his grandson Gianlorenzo, who continues the family legacy with great success.
The winery's lands are primarily in the Rovereto zone, featuring the historic Le Rive vineyards, over sixty years old, and their newest acquisition in Tassarolo. All grapes for Picollo’s wines are hand - harvested. Though recently modernised, the winery maintains traditional processes with minimal intervention, using no artificial pesticides or herbicides in the vineyards. This approach ensures that their Cortese is showcased in its purest form. Picollo's Gavi wines are fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel, preserving the true expression of the grape and terroir. The result is clean, elegant,
and refined wines with gentle aromatics underpinned by a minerality that reflects the unique terroir and microclimate of the region. These wines are a testament to the dedication and meticulous care taken in both the vineyard and winery, offering a true representation of Gavi’s potential and beauty.
Tasting note :
This Gavi di Gavi boasts an intense yellow colour in the glass, with floral and fruity aromas, including ripe peach and apricot, lifting from the nose. On the palate, it’s full and rich, offering a beautiful blend of fruit flavours and aromatic depth, supported by refreshing acidity. The long, clean finish reveals a touch of minerality that enhances its elegance. Perfect for pairing with refined dishes, this wine is ideal with fish, seafood, or enjoyed as an aperitif.
